Science and Fashion: A Borderline Lab Coat Look

My dear friend, Jackie, took these photos of me recently and before we left my house, she flamed me and said I looked like I’m wearing a lab coat. Yes, I agree, but that doesn’t mean I can’t wear it anyway.

Real talk, my mom is an engineer and I realize we need more women in STEM occupations, but…that is just not my forte. So here’s my way of offering my support to women in male-dominated professions, through fashion.

I tried to use this smoothie as a prop but I chugged it too fast. Whoops.

Happy because this smoothie was quite tasty. Also it cost $5.95 so my wallet was CRYING in my purse.

Oh, I’m sorry, was that you talking smack? Let me move my hair so I can hear you better so I know what to not care about.

Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Me Getting Yelled at By Old Men Who Think I’m a Tourist but Really I’ve Lived in the Same Place Since I Was Born, Okay? Thanks.

‘preciate it.

The Real Me and Old Man Jeans

I am a reel lyfe modul grl.

These shorts kept falling off. ProTip: Don’t buy 32/32 old man jeans and think you can make cute cutoffs !! You’ll look like a mess !!! If anyone has a Gucci belt, please send me it, I need something to hold my pants up.

TBH I would’ve preferred a nude/while mule like these, to go with this fit but A GIRL’S GOTTA SAVE MONEY every now and then GEEZ.

It’s a little blurry but I look relatively normal.

aofijrlgilvoa;vdkvnfi is what I look like

wow this is so cute and professional :-)))))

Slave Labor, Thrift Shopping and The Predicament

photo from, check them out if you want straight FACTS about fashion’s contribution to pollution and how we can lessen it.

I feel morally obligated to stop promoting clothes made by slaves overseas (from retailers like Forever 21 and H&M) who work in horrific conditions, for dirt pay and with lack of safety/health standards. One of my potential solutions was to only promote clothes made in the United States, by employees who make at least minimum wage, (if you think everyone in the United States makes minimum wage, trust me, the garment industry figured out a way around the law, as written about in this Washington Post article.) However, clothes made in the United States are generally more expensive, and something I can’t afford the luxury of purchasing every week, and I assume my readers feel the same. So only U.S.A. made clothes are off the table. Then I had an epiphany…

Let me tell you a little something about the glorious activity that is thrift shopping. I’ll make it a list because paragraphs suck and bulleted lists are more fun to read.

  • It’s cheaper! Have you every seen a shirt at a thrift store for more than $6? I haven’t. I find $60 jackets for $4 ALL THE TIME. Save that moola! Go to college! Go on a trip! Get your nails done!
  • No slave labor! When you buy a shirt at a store, the store notices that you (and other buyers) are purchasing that specific product so, they order more. When they order more clothes, someone in a factory in Bangladesh making $0.04 a day has to make those clothes for American consumption. Don’t buy cheap clothes = stores won’t order more = no slave labor.
  • Less Pollution! Fashion is the third most polluting industry in the world and the second largest consumer of water. When you buy from a thrift shop, the clothes you buy aren’t making an additional impact on greenhouse gases and other pollutants, like brand new clothes would.
  • More Unique! You can find clothes that no one else will have. How many time have you seen a satin bomber in the past six months? Once trends hit stores like Zara and Old Navy, you can guarantee that within a month, every middle-schooler, high-schooler and hip-mom is going to have it. By shopping at a thrift shop, you can find trends from five, ten or twenty years ago- something no one else will have.
  • Better Quality! Fast fashion is called fast fashion for a reason. The clothes are meant to expire after five washes. Get this- THEY DO THIS ON PURPOSE. THEY WANT YOU TO COME BACK AND BUY MORE. At thrift shops, sure, you can find fast fashion products but there will always be durable, long-lasting clothes available for great prices.

MY CONFLICT: I can’t have a blog where I want you to go out and recreate my outfits, I want you to be able to wear what I’m wearing but my clothes are all one-of-a-kind from a thrift store and I can’t get you an exact copy.

MY SOLUTION: Sell my clothes. I’ve decided to start selling some of the clothes I buy from the thrift store. I’ll feature them on my blog and then offer them on most likely eBay (follow me on Twitter to stay up to date @liaskye_ , I check Twitter more than I check my homework so if you ever need anything, my DMs always open).

I’ll be selling my clothes from my posts but not all of them, tragically I can’t be naked all the time.

Prices: Prices would vary piece to piece, but I’d hope to keep prices relatively low, however I haven’t decided whether or not to offer free shipping and include shipping costs in the purchase price, or charge shipping separately ($5-$7). If you have an opinion one way or the other, comment on this post, fill out the form on the ‘Contact’ page or DM me on Twitter.

Sizes: I’m a 2-4/S-M but I usually buy clothes larger than necessary so my clothes range from S-XXL. I’d also like to buy clothes that don’t fit me per se but if they did, I would wear. I think that would be more inclusive of everyone and of course the clothes would still be my style but could accommodate more people ♥.

Thank you so much for reading, I appreciate it immensely.

New York City Travel Guide – Restaurants

I’ve been to New York City twice in the past month so I would consider myself qualified to write a New York City Travel Guide (I’m being 93% sarcastic). Here’s a list of restaurants I can personally attest to (I would never put a restaurant at which I’ve never eaten, I’m not trying to scam you all). I’m planning on adding thrift stores/boutiques that I’ve found in New York that I like, as well as tourist-y type attractions (museums and things of that nature) in later posts.

Die Stammkneipe/ Der Schwarze Koelner

Baller German food including massive pretzels (spelled ‘Brezel’ on the menu, bt-dubs), German french fries and the sauces are AMAZING. We got regular ketchup (classic Americans), garlic ketchup (10/10, 100% recommend, it was delicious) and they had two types of mustards that we got that were both spectacular.

It’s pretty moderately priced, especially compared to Manhattan. I think a pretzel was $5 or $6 but honestly if it was $15 I still would have bought it (okay, that might be a stretch but I wanted to emphasize how good the pretzels are).

Overall Rating: 4/5

Black Seed Bagels

If you live under a rock and you don’t know that New York is known for its bagels, then it’s a good thing I told you because the best places in NYC are the ones that sell fresh, hand-rolled bagels. Black Seed Bagel sells seven different types of wood-fired bagels, freshly made every day (you can actually watch them make them in the restaurant). They have every type of topping, spread or salad you can think of from ‘Whitefish Salad, Cream Cheese and Cucumber’ on your choice of bagel to more common choices like ‘Avocado, Egg, Tomato and Spicy Mayo’ on any type of bagel, from plain to Poppy to Rye to Sesame to Everything to Salt to Multigrain Multi-Everything.

The sandwiches weren’t too highly priced for Manhattan. I think my Avocado, Egg, Tomato and Spicy Mayo on an Everything Bagel was between $10-$12. It’s definitely not as cheap as Einstein Bros. but these bagels were so good, and if you can, check and see whatever bagels are fresh out of the oven and get one. Trust me.

John Doe Craft Bar and Kitchen

My mom and I found this little place after we made the hike down 5th Avenue toward the Empire State Building only to find out that it was too cloudy and the view was terrible and not worth paying for a ticket to go up to the Observation Deck. I don’t know why I didn’t think to LOOK UP with my EYES at the SKY and realize it was ugly weather, but I guess I still I had some of that New York City optimism still in me that I got after crossing the Hudson River.

Back to the point, this restaurant was oddly quiet for a Saturday night which at first I thought was concerning, that maybe everyone knew something about this restaurant that my mom and I didn’t, but once the food came out, boy oh, boy was I wrong! My mom and I split the Spinach and Goat Cheese Dip and the Fish and Chips,  both of which were amazing. The Spinach and Goat Cheese Dip was $13 and came with “pita points” which is New York for “pita bread cut into triangles”, and it was worth every penny. The Fish and Chips, “chips” which is European for “french fries”, was $18 and a huge portion compared to what is usually served in New York. And by “huge portion” I mean, a traditional American plateful of food.

Both of these dishes were fantastic, and to top off the night, we tried the brand new Bourbon Bread Pudding which was DELICIOUS. Not sure it was worth $10 but it was darn good.

Also a picture from the restaurant’s website. I was too hungry when the food came that I forgot to take a picture. NYC makes you hungry, bring snacks.

Overall Rating: 4.3/5

Junior’s (Cheesecake)

Okay…so…this restaurant was kind of…funky. Their specialty is cheesecake…and they should stick to just cheesecake. You know how most restaurants give you a basket of bread or chips and salsa before you order? Here they give you pickles, coleslaw and beets. Not creamy, Southern-style coleslaw. I’m talking shredded cabbage and vinegar. That’s all. Not particularly tasty. It’s overpriced for mediocre food if you’re ordering off the regular menu. BUT THE CHEESECAKE. OH, THE CHEESECAKE. I got the Strawberry Cheesecake and it the topping was a bit weird, it was basically strawberry jello on top of cheesecake, I scraped it off but the CHEESECAKE. THE CHEESECAKE was SO SPECTACULAR. The serving size appears small but it is so rich and tasty that it’s hard to finish in one sitting.

Overall Rating: Actual Food- 2/5 ; Cheesecake: 4.75/5

This year will be my third homecoming and I don’t want to call myself a pro but… I definitely know the rundown when it comes to picking out a dress and shoes and makeup and blah blah blah. I felt bad about not posting as often since school has started (I’m taking 3 AP’s lol RIP) and I wanted to do something new so here’s my idea. YOU get to decide what I wear to homecoming. Although, I’ve picked out my dress and shoes (this idea didn’t hit me until midnight last night and homecoming is in a week so I don’t exactly have time to order a new dress), I wanted to let you all choose my hair, nails and makeup. I know it’s not a lot, but hair and makeup can make or break an outfit. Next time I do something fancy (which isn’t often but not all of us can be Blair Waldorf and attend constant Upper-East-Side brunches), I’ll do a BIG thing with a dress poll and shoes poll (budget-friendly of course) and it’ll be GREAT!

To start, you have to know what my dress and shoes look like (DUH)., Fame and Fortune Black Lace Bodycon Dress, $49 (Made in USA!!!), Fame and Fortune Black Lace Bodycon Dress, $49 (Made in USA!!!)

DSW, Deenal Pump, $89.95

Okay, so now you know what my dress and shoes look like, let’s look at my hair choices.

I can go total throwback and do curls like homecoming from freshman year, like this-

Clearly I had never heard of lipstick, probably because Kylie Jenner didn't have lip injections yet, but TY God for getting her Juvederm and me a Kylie Lip Kit.

OR I can go with just light, beach waves, like this-

If I'm being honest, the white of my shorts doesn't match the white of my purse and it kinda bothers me...

OR no waves at all (sorry, Kanye) and I’ll straighten my hair, like this-

I'm only using pictures of myself cause ya girl ain't going to jail for copyright infringement HELL NO

SOOOOOOO now the fun part, vote for whatever hairstyle you want me to do and I’ll do it because at this point, I can’t make any decisions and I need help.

Now, the best part, check these eyeshadow looks. Also, I’m using Pinterest pictures so I’m not totally sure if it’s legal but if someone exposes me and I get in trouble, I’m throwing hands.

First up, my girl, Hannah Blair (we’re not really “girls” but I call everyone “my girl” so I’m rolling w/ it). Anyway, she had this KILLER look in her Prom GRWM video, using the TooFaced Chocolate Bar Palette (the palette I use daily btw).

I have to come up with a name for this *~look~* so I can put it in the poll so let’s call it the BRONZE look.

Look two is my girl, Amanda Steele (also not technically my girl but again, still going with it).

I’m gonna call this the SUPER-LASHES AUBURN-Y PINKISH SMOKEY look.

Third, again, Amanda Steele (can you tell I like her?).

I’m calling this look the PINK-Y SORTA ORANGE AND RED SMUDGE look.

Okay so these labels aren’t exactly the clearest but I think you get what I’m saying. I also don’t want to spend 80 billion years trying to do a cut crease so smudge-y is really the look I’m going for this year.

I always say, if your nails don’t look good, you don’t look good. Even though I say that, my nails are chipped 24/7 and I rarely repaint them and I usually pick the polish off in the shower. So what do I know?

I do know that I need your help to pick out a nail color.

OPI, Color: Glitzerland, available at Ulta

I’m trying to keep it simple this year and stick with metallics and nudes.

Thank you so, so much for voting! I couldn’t have decided what to wear without your help! (No, seriously, I can’t make decisions. I’m not even sure how I’ve made it this far in life being this indecisive.) I’ll be sure to post plenty of pictures this Saturday from Homecoming, so be sure to follow me on Instagram @liaskye and on Twitter @liaskye_ to stay updated!

Love you, so much.
